Seriously Geeky Sundays: Family

Oh, crap… It’s Mother’s Day here in Canada. I should probably contact my mom in some form after this, eh? I’m not even sure what year it is anymore so I’m sure she’ll understand. Plus I can pull the corona card to avoid a rushed visit. Ha! But yeah, family.

Family is a bit of a, um, “complex concept” for me. I’ll spare the drama details, but I only have my parents and my two cats to call family. Just because you’re related to people by blood doesn’t mean you have to refer to them as family. Sometimes you just gotta let go of the toxic people who don’t really want you in their lives. Besides, true friends who become like family are infinitely more awesome than forced blood ties. I’m grateful to have quite a few of those cool true friends, both online and offline. Thank you ❤

The awesome Heather over at Just Geeking By started a series of blogging prompts called Seriously Geeky Sundays. This week is all about the family thing. Definitely check out Heather’s creative prompts and take part in the fun if you want! I’m absolutely loving her questions so far.

So… without anymore intro babbling from me, here are my answers to Just Geeking By’s familia realted questions for this week. Thank you, Heather!

Who is your favourite family?

Without question, The Simpsons from the hit animated TV show. This show was my obsession growing up. There’s absolutely nothing that can tear apart this wonderfully dysfunctional family unit. They’re always there for each other no matter what scheme horribly backfired on Homer.

Sarcasm and pets are really all you need to keep a family together.

Who is your favourite unconventional family?

Lightning and Serah Farron from the Final Fantasy XIII video game trilogy. These two sisters are all that’s left of their family. After their parents died, the big sister Lightning takes on an over-protective motherly role, while Serah struggles to find her place outside of her big sis’s shadow.

Fate can be an ass (especially in JRPGs) and let’s just say their epic story unfolds beautifully over three criminally over-hated Final Fantasy games that I loved playing very much. I’m an only child and an absolute sucker for any emotional story focused on close sisterly bonds.

A family bond so close not even a twisted god can stand in their way.

Which off-screen/non-played family member would you like to learn more about?

I would definitely like to learn more about Ashley Williams’ sisters and mom from the Mass Effect video games. She tells Shepard some epic tales during the games and I’d rather enjoy hearing more of those. Ashley sounds exactly like that badass big sister type of character I love.

Ashley has the best relationship attitude ever. It’s better to be true to who you are alone, rather than feeling trapped with someone you have to be fake around ❤

Who are your favourite fictional grandparents?

Cranky Kong and the deceased Wrinkly Kong in the Donkey Kong video games. Man, the older I get the more I relate to Cranky Kong’s disdain for those young whippersnapper gamers who think they know it all. Get offa my lawn with yer Fortnite and whatnot! Ahem.

In all seriousness, I love how Cranky Kong was the original ‘git gud’ guy. I remember all the times he hit Donkey Kong with his cane and yelled at him for how easy he had it. His wife, Wrinkly Kong, is also one of the coolest and most helpful ghosts ever.

I should totally invest in a cane to whack idiot gamers with!

What extended family/legacy is your favourite?

The army of Nurse Joys from the Pokemon games and anime. Every town has one of these super helpful ladies who heal your Pokemon and offer compassionate words. They are all related, apparently. That’s like the best extended family legacy ever!

The world needs more families like the Joy family.

Take the main character from your last 5 shows/movies/games/books (etc.) and create a family with them.

  1. Peter Parker from the video game Spider-man
  2. My crazed criminal alter ego Genni from Grand Theft Auto Online
  3. The jerk goose from Untitled Goose Game
  4. My Orc Dragonknight Solarayo from Elder Scrolls Online
  5. The Shade from the The Longing

Hahaha…. wow. This family would make an interesting show I’d totally watch.

The kindly Peter Parker would certainly rock at the fatherly role, unfortunately most of his family is a bit of a menace to society. He’d often be using his Spider-man powers to keep ’em all in line.

Genni would be like the drunk aunt of the family. Often getting wasted and going on rampages that end with her safely webbed to something until she sobers up.

The jerk goose would often break out of its enclosure and harass the many citizens of New York City to its heart’s content. Can you imagine all the shenanigans it could get up to there? Peter will eventually have to develop a Spider-bot that’s sole purpose is to track down the goose’s trail of jerk-ness and bring it home.

Solarayo the Orc Dragonknight is the chaotically good type of gal. I can see her highly approving of Peter’s vigilante side and helping him on spider missions. She might get a little carried away with the smashing of bad guys and often find herself webbed to something just before delivering the killing blows on things.

The Shade would definitely be like the angsty teenager who likes to hide alone in his room all the time. He’d spend his days drawing and reading Moby Dick, often being completely forgotten by the others.

  1. THE SIMPSONS! YES! I, too, was obsessed with that show growing up. Bart was my idol, ha ha!

I am right there with you on the fact that you don’t have to consider highly toxic family members as family. Life is short, and there already is too much toxicity in the world. I don’t have time or energy for that!

  2. Only child over here too! It really does give you a completely different perspective on family storylines, doesn’t it? For me, it’s sister-brother bonds, especially elder brother/younger sister, as that’s close to my heart.

I love that you included the jerk goose in your fictional fake family 😀 My nickname in high school was goose!

      1. Not as cool as you’d think lol but yes.

My cousin decided that at 10/11 I needed a nickname. He decided ‘moose’ because that was the colour of my hair (?!). When we got to high school it evolved into mongoose and eventually goose stuck. If I bump into someone from our crowd they’d probably still yell goose at me and I’d answer to it 😀
