Dynamax Dat Phat Beat! (Pokémon Sword)

Holy crap!! Pokémon sure has come a long way since I peaced out on the series after the Gold/Silver era. I’m in shock and awe over here…

Don’t get me wrong! It’s not like I hated the games after Gold/Silver or anything. Young me just lost interest in the series after that generation for whatever reason.

“Gotta catch ’em all!” was starting to feel way too overwhelming, I guess. I mean, I had a hard enough time keeping tabs on 251… now there’s, what? 800+ types of the lil’ pocket monsters crawling around?? That’s a crazy number that would take forever to acquire. Wow.

Thankfully, I’m now a stable adult gamer who realizes she doesn’t have to be an obsessive completionist to enjoy video games to their fullest (unless there’s a PlayStation platinum trophy quest involved, of course, but that’s another story).

A friend got me hooked on Pokémon GO late last year which rekindled my interest in the series. I mostly enjoyed having a virtual reward for all the walking I normally do (35km a week), but it gave me a nice introduction to many of the new-to-me Pokémon generations. They weren’t so overwhelming after all! It also taught me a healthier new Pokémon mindset: there’s no need to get everything, just whatever pops up as I go about my important business.

Time to get back into the main games! My parents gifted me a copy of Pokémon Sword for Christmas, and I finally got around to starting it last week when I was visiting them for the first time since then (damn, coronavirus). I only seem to find time for my Switch when I’m travelling. Huh.

Anyway, I fell in love with the game and binge-played it for 8 hours straight, getting all the way past the 3rd gym leader. My starter Scorbunny is already at his final evolution form, Cinderace. He’s definitely no Charizard, but a badass bunny that kicks flaming rocks is still totally awesome!

The story is interesting (albeit very cheesy), the world is beautiful, the pocket monsters are all adorable, and it has a lot of improved versions of the mechanics I loved from the old games (party wide XP earning is the best, and the reason why I have a Gyarados already).

What struck me as the most amazing thing ever is the epic gym leader battle vibes. WOW! Epic is actually an understatement.

The gym leader battles take place in the middle of a stadium with a crowd roaring all around you. There’s this weird Dynamax force thing that temporarily turns your Poké-pals into gigantic killing machines. And the best part that ties it all together: the freaking fantastic music track.

It’s like a supercharged rave on Poké-steroids… uh, you seriously have to experience one to know what I’m babbling about. The overall feeling is just so damn cool. It speaks to my inner child on all the levels and awakens that wonder I once had for the Poke-world.

I can’t wait to take down the rest of the gym leaders and go after the Champion spot!

My fiery Raboot totally kicked the grass guy’s butt! Ha!
